Lemuel Gulliver and Samuel Clemens

In Girl in the Glass, when James and Declan escape the Willard and arrive at the DC airport, their tickets are waiting under the aliases Lemuel Gulliver and Samuel Clemens.

Lemuel Gulliver is the fictional, eponymous protagonist of Jonathan Swift's satirical novel "Gulliver's Travels." Through his four voyages to fictional lands, he encounters societies like the tiny Lilliputians, the giants of Brobdingnag, and the rational horses of Houyhnhnm Land, satirizing aspects of human nature and society.

In contrast, Samuel Clemens is the real name of the author Mark Twain, his pen name derived from a riverboat term. When the water depth measured at least two fathoms, or twelve feet deep, steamboat hands would yell “Mark Twain” to indicate it was safe to navigate.
