Pact of Steel

In Girl in the Glass, when James and Declan arrive in Colorado, Garrett asks if they’ve heard about the Pact of Steel. The alliance between Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, signed just a few days earlier, on May 22, 1939, formalized a military and political alliance between Hitler and Mussolini, committing both nations to support each other in the event of war.

This agreement was a crucial step in the formation of the Axis powers, later including Japan, and significantly contributed to the escalation of tensions leading up to World War II. As James points out, Hitler is no longer hiding his bellicose ambitions. Perhaps because the Nazi leader believes the Obturavi’s Wunderwaffe, the atomic weapon, is near completion.
