The Swamp Fox - Francis Marion
In Girl in the Glass, Bruce describes Garrett’s impressive military background, calling him a Swamp Fox. While this term doesn’t mean anything to Declan, James explains:
“The original Swamp Fox fought in the Revolutionary War, kicked the British’s collective ass by implementing ingenious countermeasures. A legend. I’ve heard rumors about an elite tactical unit known as the Swamp Foxes. They get sent to clean up the dirty messes regular forces can’t handle, when accepted warfare techniques won’t suffice. But that’s bullshit, they’re a military myth. Campfire stories for new recruits.”
Although a present-day, elite fighting force known as the Swamp Foxes only exists in Girl in the Glass, the original Swamp Fox was a pivotal figure in America’s Revolutionary War. The Swamp Fox, Francis Marion, effectively used guerrilla warfare tactics against the British in South Carolina, leading a small militia using quick strikes and ambushes against larger, better-equipped British forces. He was well-known for disappearing into the area's dense swamps and forests, making him incredibly elusive, hampering British efforts to capture or neutralize his forces.
The name “Swamp Fox” was coined out of frustration by British Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton. After an arduous, seven-hour chase through swampland, Tarleton gave up the pursuit of Francis Marion. He complained about Marion, "As for this damned old fox, the Devil himself could not catch him". When the story spread, Marion became known as the "Swamp Fox".
